We are working on a story and documentary with Bernadine Wade who is the mother of "Nene". Nene is mentally handicapped and has ADHD. Nene was transported to and from Beach Globe Elementary, a school for children with learning disabilities. After 18 months, Mrs Wade was told that her Daughter, (the only female and the only black child on the Van) was always told to go to the back of the van and therefore had been sexually molested several times a week by a 16 year old white boy in the back seat of the van. Nene was threatened that if she told anyone, her mother would be killed. It was another student that came forward after feeling sick about the situation for all that time. Mrs Wade has been fighting the system since 2004 on her daughters behalf as well as to change the laws to protect other children in the future. The school says that they are not responsible for what happens to children during the transporting to and from school. The Courts have agreed that Nene was dicsriminated against but insist they are not responsible for the rape. The young man responsible for the continued molesting and rapes only served 10 months in jail and will only be a sex offender for 10 years. Nene now suffers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
