Jan Brewer got a lot of grief from gubernatorial rival Terry Goddard, other Democrats and the news media when she said this summer illegal immigration and the drug trade from Mexico was resulting in beheadings in the desert.
Goddard and we in the media challenged the Republican governor to back up the beheading statement she made on the Fox News.
Brewer eventually backtracked, as there had been no beheadings in Arizona.
Well, it turns Brewer wasn’t too off-base with her claim. There was recently a murder of man in Chandler involving an illegal immigrant in which the victim was killed and beheaded. The Oct. 10 murder has some upsetting parallels to the drug crimes and scores of murders that have been happening in Mexico the past few years as cartels battle for turf and against non-corrupt police.
Mexican police, journalists and rival drug gang personnel have shown up beheaded — a signature of cartel violence.
Now, at least in Chandler, that M.O. is documented here in the Valley and it’s something the Brewer campaign will likely point out as we head towards election day..
