ARLINGTON — Police made two arrests on Friday in connection with a street gang shoot-out that ended high school soccer and baseball games at nearby Sam Houston High School on Wednesday.
No one was injured, but school officials "pulled everybody off the field into the building," Jimmy Womack, the Arlington school district's security chief, said Thursday.
Derrick DeWayne Whitehead and Jerome Hardy, both 17, arrested each suspect in separate traffic stops in the 2000 block of Valley View Lane in Irving, police said.
Police officers saw Whitehead, of Arlington, get into a car and did the traffic stop, police said. Then, while that vehicle was stopped, police saw a second vehicle that matched the description of a vehicle used in the shooting and pulled that vehicle over, police said.
A man in the second vehicle matched the description of a suspect involved in the shooting, police said. Out of that vehicle, police arrested Hardy. Police also recovered two handguns from an apartment one of the suspects was frequenting.
People reported hearing as many as 20 shots during Wednesday’s shooting, but police said that they don't have an accurate count. One vehicle was struck by at least two bullets, Arlington gang Sgt. Don Pilcher said.
The shots that disrupted the games were fired about 8 p.m. from a vehicle in the 2700 block of Sherry Street near Timberview Lane.
