Melissa’s Story

Melissa* was attending nursing school while living with her partner and two children. Her partner refused to watch their children during nursing school hours and Melissa risked being dropped from the program and losing her financial aid if she did not attend regularly.

When Melissa enlisted the help of a family member to baby-sit, her partner became angry and started beating her. The abuse lasted for about two weeks before Melissa planned her escape.

When she tried to leave, her abusive partner beat her to prevent her from going. The police arrived and helped her escape to the Women Against Abuse Emergency Shelter with her two young daughters.

Melissa had been granted a temporary protection from abuse order, but wanted a permanent order against her abuser. The Women Against Abuse Legal Center staff  helped Melissa obtain a permanent protection order in Philadelphia Family Court.

After working with a Women Against Abuse Case Manager to prioritize her goals and learn of potential resources, Melissa was able to connect with Child Care Information Services. With her children in safe hands, Melissa was able to return to her evening classes. She also attended counseling sessions provided by Women In Transition.

Melissa applied to several transitional housing programs and moved into Lutheran Settlement House’s transitional housing program after three months in the Women Against Abuse emergency shelter. Melissa also began looking for a job and dressing more professionally. She was outfitted with business attire from Career Wardrobe, and recently started a job in the retail industry.

In addition to these life changes, Melissa’s demeanor underwent a major transformation. When she arrived at the shelter, Melissa seemed to possess low self-esteem – her eyes always pointed toward the floor when she spoke to others. By the time Melissa left the shelter, she looked people directly in the eyes with confidence. Her children also seemed to be more social and energetic.

It was Women Against Abuse's supportive and holistic services, grounded in an empowerment approach, which equipped Melissa to change her life circumstances. And it is stories like Melissa’s that encourage WAA employees to continue their vital work each day.
