Authorities seize heroin, arrest 23 in Chicago

Federal authorities say an investigation on Chicago's West Side has led to nearly two dozen arrests and the seizure of heroin worth at least $1.2 million.

Most of the 29 defendants named in the 230-page indictment are members or associates of the New Breeds street gang. On Thursday, 23 were in federal custody.

Authorities allege the gang and its associates ran an open air drug market within a 12-block radius that netted as much as $10,000 per day John Riley of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency calls it "a great day for the good guys." But authorities at a news conference Thursday declined to discuss what the overall impact would be on the heroin trade.

The Operation Bird Cage investigation began in October 2009. Defendants are due in court on Aug. 23 and don't yet have attorneys.
