STOCKTON - A 14-year-old boy beaten, kicked and stomped to death by at least seven others near Panella Park earlier this month drew the group's resentment because he wanted out of his street gang, the victim's relative told investigators.

Rin Ros died because his gang apparently wanted to "jump him out," according to a search warrant return that Stockton police Detective Mark Reynolds filed Monday at San Joaquin County Superior Court.

Detectives interviewed Ketmany Keopadapsy, Ros' cousin by marriage, who said he tried to block the brutal attack on Ros, but the gang members - some of them teenagers who rode their bicycles to the attack - shoved him away, he said.

Reynolds said Keopadapsy told him he "believed this assault was 'CTC' trying to kill (Ros) or 'jump him out' of the gang," according to the detective's 18-page search warrant return.

Ros, a Stagg High School student, had been in the Crazy Town Crips, or CTC, a gang whose members claim the Carrington Circle neighborhood. In the Aug. 6 attack, the gang members tracked him down and surrounded him, the warrant says.

Seven defendants - three of them 14 years old - have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. They are due in a Stockton courtroom today for further arraignment.

The defendants are Savann Rang, 21; Michael Muy, 19; Ron Korm, 16; Kailler Sam, 16; Jereme Sin, 14; Allen Phalit, 14; and Sovannara Yam, 14. Prosecutors have charged the juveniles as adults. The charges make them eligible for life prison sentences.

The search warrant describes detectives' interviews with most of the defendants. Many of them admit they took part in the attack and identified others who were involved. Many of them minimized their role in the attack, blaming others for the brutality.

Keopadapsy, who told police he had once been an Asian Street Walker gang member, said he and Ros were seated in his car parked at the park. Keopadapsy was in the driver's seat, and Ros was his passenger.

The two were waiting for a friend when the group arrived. They told Ros to get out, Keopadapsy told police.

"Ros looked scared, and he told Keopadapsy to get out of there," the witness told police. Keopadapsy couldn't leave, because the group blocked them, standing in front of and behind the car, the report says.

"Ros rolled up his window," Keopadapsy said, adding that one of the attackers pounded on the car. Ros eventually got out, and the beating began, the search warrant says.

The attackers shouted racial epithets at Ros and told him he was going to die. After the attack, the group fled, leaving Ros. Keopadapsy couldn't lift him back into the car, needing help from their friend, the search warrant says.

Keopadapsy took Ros home, where somebody dialed 911. A doctor at St. Joseph's Medical Center later pronounced Ros dead of apparent cardiac arrest. Officers began making arrests and searching the suspects' homes for evidence.

In an interview room with detectives, Muy admitted he threw a punch at Ros but said he missed. Muy blamed Rang for telling him to punch Ros.

Sin admitted to being a CTC member and beating Ros. He told detectives that the gang became mad at Ros because he would no longer hang out with them. They saw Ros with rival gang members, such as Keopadapsy, known as "Ghost," the search warrant says.

For those who had no criminal record, officers used high school yearbooks to identify the suspects. Yam and Phalit were students at Cesar Chavez High School. Phalit said he was not a gang member and didn't know why he participated in the attack.

"He said he knew it was a big mistake, and he was sorry he got involved," the search warrant says.

Sam, also a Chavez student, said he goes by the street name of "Killer." He told investigators that he was on Carrington Circle when he received a text message of Ros' whereabouts at the park with Keopadapsy.

"Sam said he hesitated about going, because he knew something bad might happen, but decided to go anyway," the search warrant says.

Sam said he only kicked Ros a couple of times in the legs and then told everyone to stop, but they continued. Word on the street was that Ros also ran with Loc Town Crips and members of the Tiny Rascals Gang, Sam told investigators.

Yam, who admitted kicking Ros in the back at his kidney, said the group beating lasted a matter of seconds.

Yam described Ros as lying curled up on the ground in a fetal position, covering his head in an attempt to protect himself, the search warrant says. Yam added that Ros "was not fighting back." ...
