Thank you for taking the time to address my concerns. My (friends) brother-in-law, George Martorano has been a federal inmate for the past 27 years. He was arrested in 1983 on various drug offenses. He plead guilty and received a “draconian-like” prison sentence of LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE. While I agree that George’s crimes were very serious, I cannot agree with the no-hope sentence he was given. I read and hear stories of people with MUCH more serious crimes getting much lighter sentences on a daily basis. George Martorano is NOT the same man he was 27 years ago and should not be judged on who he was for the rest of his life. He has changed, he is a teacher, a writer, and helps other inmates with various problems. George has filed brief after brief to access some relief only to have all denied. He was concidered by the Bush administration for a “commutation of sentence” for 5 years, before receiving a notice of denial. My question to you sir would have to be, who benefits from keeping this man locked up one more day?? Why do we cage NON-VIOLENT drug offenders with hope-less sentences? Why waste tax dollars on caging this man any longer when he would be a benefit in the free world ?? I pray and hope that you will look at this man’s file and case, and see that he is deserving of a “second chance” and should be given one. Please have George Martorano released with “TIME SERVED”. 27 years for his crimes is more than enough.WE NEED TO WRITE OUR PRESIDENT ABOUT OVER TURNING THESE DRUG LAWS IT VERY CRAZY
