Violence is a serious public health problem in the United States. From infants to the elderly, it affects people in all stages of life. In 2010, over 16,250 people were victims of homicide and over 38,360 took their own life.
The number of violent deaths tells only part of the story. Many more survive violence and are left with permanent physical and emotional scars. Violence also erodes communities by reducing productivity, decreasing property values, and disrupting social services.

Suicide is a serious public health problem that can have lasting harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities. While its causes are complex and determined by multiple factors, the goal of suicide prevention is simple: Reduce factors that increase risk (i.e. risk factors) and increase factors that promote resilience (i.e. protective factors). Ideally, prevention addresses all levels of influence: individual, relationship, community, and societal. Effective prevention strategies are needed to promote awareness of suicide and encourage a commitment to social change. STAND UP ARIZONA... 9/6/14

Sexual violence is a significant public health problem in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the United States have been raped at some time in their lives and nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men have experienced other forms of sexual violence victimization in their lifetime (e.g., made to penetrate someone, sexual coercion, unwanted sexual contact and non-contact unwanted sexual experiences).1 Victimization often occurs for the first time before the age of 25 (e.g., 40% of female victims of rape in the U.S. report that they were first raped before the age of 18 and 37% report that they were first raped between the ages of 18-24).1 Victimization is also often by someone known to the victim, primarily by a current or former intimate partner or an acquaintance.1 Rape, and other forms of sexual violence, is preventable. Recognizing this, Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act in 1994. This landmark legislation established the Rape Prevention and Education (RPE) program at CDC. The goal of the RPE program is to strengthen sexual violence prevention efforts at the local, state, and national level. It operates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and six U.S. territories. STAND UP ARIZONA 9/6/14

Donna Buchanan will be speaking at the event.
Donna started running away at the age of 14, soon the streets became her life. She was consumed with drug addiction, raped and sexually assaulted, and ended up in a domestic violence relationship which ultimately led to her conviction of 2nd degree murder. Once there she was determined to write her wrongs and take responsibility for her actions. While incarcerated she started training Greyhound dogs who were also getting a second chance at life. Together they begin to change lives of those who were around them. Donna's goal is to educate the youth against drugs and violence. Donna's new Book was released Sept 30, 2013 and entitled Second Chance Runaway. Donna is educating others not to make the same mistakes she has made. Donna was recently interviewed by Dr. Casey Jordan and the Donna Buchanan story will air on the ID channel this fall
