2 injured in gang-related shooting in Providence.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Just hours after the city's third homicide of the year, two men were shot Thursday night in a separate incident in what the police describe as a gang-related drive-by shooting in the West End.

The men's injuries are not considered to be life-threatening, Maj. Thomas F. Oates III said.

The two men -- Sareivouth Cheam, 20, of Union Ave., and Anthony Chhoeur, 18, of Public St. -- were in the park behind the Messer Street fire station when a silver four-door vehicle apparently pulled up on Union Avenue and a person inside fired shots into the park, striking the two men. The car sped off, Oates said.

The police were called to the scene at 8:18 p.m. and found both men with gunshot wounds. Cheam was shot in the shoulder and buttocks and was in good condition Friday night at Rhode Island Hospital, Oates said. Chhoeur was shot in the thigh, Oates said.

In a separate incident Thursday night, the police arrested a man on gun charges after an undercover officer began investigating a report of shots fired about a half mile from the homicide earlier Thursday.
