Two Maricopa-based filmmakers are looking for local actors to play several roles in their next film.
Director Ruben Garcia and lead actor Jesse Eyman will hold two casting calls in Maricopa later this month to fill 12 parts for “Celestial Hunt,” their sequel to their first film, “Celestial Run,” which premiered in Tempe in August.
“We’re looking to bring in some new fresh faces and some new fresh talent,” Garcia said.
The new cast will join the original cast, all of whom will replay their original roles, for “Celestial Hunt.” The second in what projects to be a three-film series follows the angel Shammah, who was introduced in “Celestial Run,” as he tries to live a normal life on Earth. But as the angel Lucifer hunts for a weapon with magnificent power, Shammah is called upon to stop Lucifer while evading the Archangel Michael.
The roles Garcia and Eyman want to fill range in age – from a teenage part up to roles for 50-somethings – physical attributes, racial makeup and particularly prominence, as Garcia said there are seven new roles that have significant importance to the plot.
“The biggest part we’re casting for is the new nemesis for the second film; that’s going to be a huge role,” Garcia said.
Although Eyman and Garcia plan to have a casting session in Phoenix, their goal is to keep as much of the film in Maricopa as possible. It’s something they did with “Celestial Run,” which featured a Maricopa-heavy cast and had all but one scene – shot in a Japanese garden in the Valley – filmed in Maricopa.
This time around, Garcia said the filmmakers plan to revisit some of the old locations, for example Raceway Bar and Grill, and add a few new landmarks to maintain a noticeable “Maricopa feel.”
If all goes right, Garcia said they’d even like to have the film premiere at the UltraStar move theater that’s coming to the Ak-Chin Indian Community to keep their connection with the community.
“I think that’d be a really great topping for this,” he said.
After casting is finished, Garcia said filming will commence shortly thereafter and will last from November until March. Interested actors need to reserve a spot for one of the casting sessions – Oct. 12 between 4 and 9 p.m. and Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – by Oct. 10.
