Rapper '40 Glocc's' image considered in Colton gang injunction trial

Lawrence White's image as street-hardened rapper has served him well, but it remains a point of contention in the trial to determine his inclusion in a gang injunction in his native Colton.

In closing briefs filed late last month, the San Bernardino County district attorney's office argues that White -- as "40 Glocc" -- consistently flaunts his membership in Colton City Crips, supporting police and…

On patrol in Mexico's most dangerous city

Police trampled over the scene where one man was killed - in front of his young family

Mexico's Ciudad Juarez is one of the world's most dangerous cities, plagued by battles between drug gangs. A BBC team witnessed its violence at first hand on a police patrol, as Ian Sherwood reports.

The sun sets early now that winter is approaching. It is nearly 1800 and Ciudad Juarez has already descended into darkness.

We drive up to Estacion Delicias…

Efforts to stop gang violence in Ohio's youth prisons are ineffective

COLUMBUS - Efforts to stop gang violence in Ohio's youth prisons are ineffective and three facilities remain unacceptably dangerous places for young people, according to a new report.

While the Department of Youth Services has tried to fix the problem, the agency is also guilty of "a widespread and somewhat misguided belief that gang violence may no longer be a significant problem," the report released late Wednesday said.

"The time has come for a different approach to gang…

Mexico prison gang fighting kills 29

A clash between rival gangs in a prison in Mexico's north-western state of Sinaloa has left 29 inmates dead.

The killings brought the number of dead on another day of apparent drug-related violence to more than 40.

In the western state of Michoacan, 12 police officers died in an ambush by suspected drug cartel gunmen.

Michoacan and Sinaloa are home to rival drug gangs that are fighting turf wars and battling security forces.

Officials said 18…

Mexican drug gangs 'spread to every region of US'

Mexican drug gangs have expanded their activities in the US with heroin production doubling in 2008, the US justice department says in a report.

Despite US funding for the war on drugs, trade in marijuana, ecstasy and methamphetamine also grew, the National Drug Threat Assessment said.

The report found that Mexican groups were active in every region of the US.

Gangs were moving an estimated $40bn (£27bn) in cash back into Mexico across the border…

'Family values' of Mexico drug gang

They decapitate, torture, and extort. Then they pray, and donate to charity.

The "Familia" cartel is perhaps the most extreme example of the paradoxical enemy which Mexico faces as it tries to defeat organised crime.

It is a fight which would be much easier if the cartels were simply maverick gangs on the fringe of society.

But they are, in many areas, part of society.

"La Familia was originally a social structure. And in many ways it still is," says a…

Sexual abuse touches every life when.......

Sexual abuse touches every life when it leads to losses of trust, decreases in self esteem, and development of shame, guilt and depression.

A New Dawn: The terrorist gang

The worst type of terrorism is the kind that is effective.

This was my answer when I was watching a television panel that discussed which was worse, homegrown or international terrorism. For all the inter-agency fighting, the bottom line is that any successful terrorist attack is a bad one.

As correctional professionals, we are now on the front lines of this battle, and politics aside, there are some real threats we need to recognize and combat.

The gang…

Nogales, AZ police at disadvantage in fighting drug smugglers

NOGALES, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - The Nogales, Arizona Police Department says it will not be stopped by threats from drug cartels. But Nine On Your Side has learned Nogales police are also threatened by a lack of funding. Outdated tools are putting its officers at a disadvantage when it comes to fighting drug smugglers.

Authorities in Cincinnati again target 'Tot Lot Posse,' gang taking name from playground

CINCINNATI (AP) — Authorities say they've charged 27 people with drugs and weapons counts in a new attempt to break up what's called the "Tot Lot Posse" in Cincinnati.

Police believe there are some 70 members in a gang that takes its name from a children's playground near police headquarters. Investigators say the west-end neighborhood gang had rebuilt after a rash of 2004 arrests.

BIG PIMPING

Why is it so hard to catch men who sell teen girls for sex?

Like a lot of 14-year-old girls, all Shaquana wanted was a boyfriend. The skinny Brooklyn, N.Y. eighth-grader was on the honor roll at school, but unhappy at home. She hadn’t seen her father in years, and endured constant teasing about her looks from her siblings and verbal abuse from her strict, religious mother.

“I used to pray every night that God would make me prettier…
