by KYW's David Madden A major mob indictment in New Jersey involves not just a big time, New York-based crime family but several members of a violent street gang. And among them, a suspect well known in South Jersey circles. "Operation Heat" has been in the works for years, according to Stephen Taylor, Director of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice. Most of those indicted by a grand jury are charged with dealing in billions of dollars in illegal gambling worldwide. Among them.... "Both Nicodemo Scarfo, Jr. (photo) and the current top capo in New Jersey, Raplh V. Perna, are charged with overseeing the Lucchese family's criminal activities in New Jersey." Scarfo, son of the onetime Philadelphia crime boss, was picked up in his home down the shore. But there were also 9 members of the Bloods street gang who allegedly worked with the Luccheses to smuggle drugs and prepaid cell phones behind prison walls. And that alleged alliance has law enforcement more than a little concerned.
