Former California hero convicted in gang shooting

FRESNO, Calif. — As a little boy, Ivan Ramirez was honored as a hometown hero for saving a drowning peer. Now, 13 years later, a jury has convicted the Fresno gang member for his role in a drive-by shooting.

Ramirez, 21, was found guilty Tuesday of shooting at an inhabited house, being a felon with a gun and participating in a gang. He faces a possible life prison term when he's sentenced on Aug. 31.

Suspected West Oakland gang leader found guilty

OAKLAND -- The suspected leader of a notorious West Oakland street gang was found guilty Thursday of seven felonies, including attempted murder, and now faces at least 40 years in state prison.

Marc Anthony Candler, 35, who police and prosecutors say ran the Acorn gang and tried to kill a member of a rival gang, joked with bailiffs before the verdict was read and laughed as a court clerk announced the jury's decision.

Gang member sentenced to death for 2008 Compton murders

LOS ANGELES - A gang member was sentenced to death today for murdering two men in separate shootings in Compton in 2008.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Curtis B. Rappe rejected an automatic motion to reduce the jury's death sentence recommendation for Travis Jeremy Lewis to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Officials laud GPS system tracking gang parolees...

OAKLAND, Calif.—Law enforcement officials are touting a program that's been monitoring paroled gang members by strapping GPS units to their ankles—a program first used to monitor sex offenders.

Queens man slain saving brother (Woodhaven, NY):

A gang of thugs slit the throat of a Queens pre-law student on July 30 when he ran to help his younger brother escape a beating on a Woodhaven subway station.

Police stop van with armed gang member in Manteca, CA

A Manteca Police gang suppression unit stopped a van filled with gang members shortly after midnight Saturday and arrested a 20-year-old Manteca man with a semi-automatic hand gun in his possession that had one round in the chamber.
